This is an essay written by Frank DeVenuto of Salem, Missouri. He was a candidate for state representative in 2020. His essay on rights is even more applicable today than the day it was written.
Does The Constitution Change?
The U.S. Constitution is the anchor which holds our nation together and preserves each individual’s liberty and ensures equal liberty for all. Since it lists our God-given rights, as noted by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, any attempts to make it conform to ever-changing social issues destroys an individual’s liberties. What people forget or are ignorant of is that these rights come from God and that if they came from a majority or the rule of the government, then they are nothing more than privileges and we are all subjects to whomever is in charge.
Where Do Rights Come From?
Rights are inalienable and fundamental to every person because they are a human being, and existing before and independent of any legal ruling. In essence, Madison wrote down the rights that God gave each person and it is the sole responsibility of the government to protect them. Governments, legislators, and institutions may violate, obfuscate, or protect a person’s rights, but they cannot grant or take them away.
Current Situations And Rights
To change the U.S. Constitution incorporating social justice based on race, status, the whims of a majority, overreach of the government, or some other criteria, destroys the rights of every American. Once rights are removed for one American, the door is now open to remove the rights of every American.
God And Rights
Rights, such as life and self-protection, are the claims individuals have against others. They cannot be altered or removed without violating the morality and conscience of another. Forcing one’s views on another through legislation or judicial means puts the nation on the precipice of purging morality from its heritage. Liberty for each individual must be safeguarded through the preservation of the US Constitution as written and intended by the Founding Fathers. This means the government and the people must act moral and be moral based upon God’s laws as written, and defended, by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence.
