On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court overturned the court case ruling of Roe v. Wade (which legalized abortion). The decision of whether to allow abortion or not was then handed over to the states. Right after the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was announced, Missouri was the first state to ban abortions.
Roe V. Wade Overturned
After a draft of the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked, states have been deciding what to do when the official decision comes. On June 24, 2022, Roe v. Wade was overturned by a majority vote of 6-3 along party lines.
First State
Right after the court ruling was made, Missouri was the first state to ban all abortions unless there is a medical emergency. Thirteen other states- Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming- had trigger laws that bans abortion in most cases. [1] Five more states had previous laws in effect before Roe v. Wade. The states include Alabama, Arizona, Michigan, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Gov. Parson Comment
In a press release, Missouri governor, Mike Parson, stated that he’s glad that the rights have been given back to the states.
Nothing in the text, history, or tradition of the United States Constitution gave un-elected federal judges authority to regulate abortion. We are happy that the U.S. Supreme Court has corrected this error and returned power to the people and the states to make these decisions. [2]
Governor Parson tweeted his “Right to Life of the Unborn Child Act” on Twitter which announced the end of abortions in Missouri.
Protect Life
Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt said in a statement that Missouri is a state that respects, protects, and promotes the life of the unborn.
This opinion immediately restores Missouri’s deeply rooted history and proud tradition of respecting, protecting, and promoting the life of the unborn. [3]
He went on to say that Missouri has been a national leader in the pro-life movement.
