A big blockbuster movie that released on Memorial weekend this year was Top Gun: Maverick. This comes out thirty-six years after the original Top Gun. After the 2019 trailer which replaced the Japanese and Taiwanese flag on Maverick’s jacket with objects similar to the flags, the filmmakers added it back in when the movie was released into theaters.
China Pulls Out
Before Top Gun: Maverick came out, the China-based film production company, Tencent Pictures, pulled out of financing the movie. The reason that they pulled out was because of the pro-American theme in the movie. They were worried that it would anger China. [1]
2019 Trailer
Earlier in 2019 when the Top Gun: Maverick trailer came out, observant fans noticed that Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s (Tom Cruise) jacket had been altered. In the original Top Gun on the back of the jacket, there was the United States, United Kingdom, Japanese, and Taiwanese flag on it. [2] In the 2019 trailer, though, the Japanese and Taiwanese flag had been replaced with objects similar to the flags.
Movie Comes Out
When the movie finally came out in theaters, fans noticed that the Japanese and Taiwanese flag had been put back on the jacket.
Conclusion
While we may never know why the flags were replaced with objects in the first place and then added back in, we can know that Top Gun: Maverick celebrates our United States navy and entire military.
Enjoy!
Top Gun: Maverick has grossed over one billion dollars worldwide. [3] The blockbuster hit is still playing in theaters. Make sure to get out and enjoy this great movie!
