Alton, Mo. – The Alton Chamber of Commerce met on May 18 at the Alton United Methodist Church. Many items were on the list of discussions. The Chamber wants the public’s opinion for several upcoming events.
Eclipse
The first item that was discussed was the upcoming Great American Eclipse. West Plains and Doniphan are already gearing up for this event. Ideas were tossed around, like ordering eclipse glasses, designing stickers for cars, and scheduling astronomer speakers. Already, local campgrounds and Airbnb’s are full. Ideas came suggesting the school contact other schools for this event. June 13 is the next meeting, where the Chamber will have a flyer of items to discuss and approve concerning the eclipse. All interested in the eclipse are encouraged to attend this meeting.
Walnut Festival
Plans are underway for this year’s Walnut Festival. The booth forms are getting updated. Along with that, the Chamber’s website is getting a new look where businesses and people can renew their memberships or rent a booth all online. Following the festival, students needing community service can help with the cleanup. This year’s Walnut Festival shirt was chosen.
Fireworks
Doing something different, the Chamber decided to have a booth at the fireworks. This would be a membership/information booth. It will also advertise our plans for the upcoming eclipse.
Pocket Park
Also, adding to new news, attendees discussed the pocket park and what to do with it. This is the park on the square between the library and JoElla Beauty Collective. They want to make it children and family-friendly. Activities, grounds, colors, seating- all need to be decided. The next meeting for the park will be June 1 at 1:00 pm at JoElla’s. All interested or who have ideas for the park are encouraged to attend. You need not be a member of the chamber to give input.
Officers
Following these pieces of interest, officers were elected.
The Chamber encourages local businesses and residents to attend the meetings to give vital input. They are making big decisions regarding the direction of our community.
