On October 12, 2023, Representative Jason Smith announced the Ways and Means Committee findings. He spoke on a trust gap between the IRS and American taxpayers.

A recent report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) confirmed that the Biden administration cooked the books in its so-called “study” into establishing a forced file system at the IRS that would make the agency both tax collector and tax preparer. The Biden administration’s “study” into establishing the program was a foregone conclusion designed to further their goal of inserting the IRS into every aspect of Americans’ lives.

The IRS Position

The study had no neutral answer, only one way or the other. When given additional information, most participants would not choose the e-file system as it left out state filing. Additionally, the IRS could not substantiate any of its documentation. Those on the panel promoting the IRS e-file system were primarily Democrats, or they were liberal-minded, like Bernie Sanders. These individuals have long wanted the IRS to file and audit tax returns.

Congress’ View

Congress has not authorized a direct e-file program because the IRS has proven to be one of the least trustworthy agencies in Washington. The American people rightly oppose making the already supercharged agency their tax preparer, filer, and auditor. The Ways and Means Committee will continue its oversight of the IRS and the Biden Administration to ensure they comply with the law and American taxpayers are protected.
