Firearm deer season is coming up from November 16th through the 26th, 2024. To prepare for it, here’s some basic things to know for both hunters and non-hunters.

Orange

When hunting, make sure to wear bright orange. This allows other hunters to see you and not shoot you. Even if you aren’t hunting but you’re walking in the woods, it would be a good idea to wear orange so hunters can see you.

Going Hunting

Before going hunting, check your deer stands to make sure they are secured and ready to go. Knowing where property lines are is also a good idea in case your deer jumps the fence. Before going hunting, ti would be a good idea to know where your gutting and skinning gear is if you’re doing it yourself. Depending on what time you hunt, know when sunrise and sunset is. When hunting, especially on public land, it’s a good idea to bring water and basic first aid items.

Driving

For non-hunters, when driving down dirt roads and sometimes paved roads, be prepared for side-by-sides and pickups to be parked along the side of the road. Also, be alert for more deer activity crossing the road because of the hunters.

Schedule

For Oregon County, normal deer season is from November 16th-26th, but the CWD portion is from November 27th-December 1st. For the first two days of the normal season, any deer shot must be taken into a CWD sampling station. For more information on the schedules and rules, you can go here.
