According to a report from the Washington Post, President-elect Trump is considering privatizing the United States Postal Service (USPS). While government agencies have trouble listening to watchdog groups that could help the USPS, perhaps privatizing our mail would be in the future?

Profits?

Three people with knowledge of the matter told the outlet that Trump had been talking with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s pick to serve as the Commerce Secretary, about carrying out an “overhaul” of the U.S. Postal Service. It seems the postal service continues to be unprofitable. There are also talks about closing rural post offices, which Representative Smith is vocally against.

Raising stamp prices several times a year seems not to alleviate the situation.

Past Presidency

According to Axios, a task force that Trump created during his first term suggested that the U.S. Postal Service consider increasing the prices for shipping certain packages.

While Trump’s plans to overhaul the Postal Service were not “immediately clear,” one of the sources told the outlet that Trump had met with “a group of transition officials” and had requested their input on “privatizing the agency.”
