Jelly Belly’s become especially prominent during April. When the Easter bunny comes and leaves various candies throughout the lawn and house, you can’t help but be reminded about how much you love Jelly Belly’s. The inventor of these beans, however, has something new up his sleeves. CBD infused jelly beans.

In 1976 David Klein invented the Jelly Belly and sold them in an ice cream store in Los Angeles. Shortly after the candy became a hit, he sold the Jelly Belly trademark to Goelitz fo $10,000 a month for the next 20 years. Goelitz soon changed the name to Jelly Belly Candy Co. and is currently making around $193 million annually. Klein has since stated that selling the trademark was one of the worst decisions he’s made.

That’s not the end of the story, however. Klein has now started a new business called Spectrum Confections. They specialize in making jelly beans that are infused with cannabidiol, otherwise known as CBD, or the non-psychoactive part of marijuana. [1]

The candy so far is sold in 38 different flavors with additional options of being “sour” or “sugar-free.” Every, individual, bean contains 10 milligrams of CBD. “[…] The jelly bean is perfect for the proper dosage [of CBD],” Klein says, “we are putting 10 ml in each [bean]. If people want a small dose, they eat one. If they want 20 ml, they can eat two,” and so on. “They can decide what their proper dosage is.” [2]

Currently, the Jelly Belly candy company is not involved with Spectrum Confections or with any CBD infused candy at this point of time. The food industry has been undergoing a few changes lately, most of which have to do with putting CBD into foods. Analysts at the investment bank of Cowen recently estimated that the US market of CBD could go up from the current $1 billion to $16 billion by 2025. [3]
