Alton, Mo. – On Friday, July 3, 2020, the AltonMo.com team went to the Alton, Missouri fireworks to ask people some questions about what the 4th of July means, why do we celebrate it, and what their favorite tradition or activity is.
So what do people think the Fourth of July is about? The question, “Why do we celebrate the 4th of July?” received an overwhelming response of “celebrate independence” and the response to “what is your favorite part of this holiday?” varied from “being with family and friends” to “fireworks!”

The War for Independence From English Tyranny
The American Revolutionary War started with the shot heard round the world at Lexington and Concord in 1775. The Second Continental Congress met, delegates argued over the merits of revolution and whether there was sufficient reason to declare independence from England. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776.
Even though the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, the war did not end until 1783. After the war ended, the thirteen colonies were referred to as the United States of America.
