Thayer, Mo. – The Thayer Bobcats football team had a great season last year but did not make it all the way. The Bobcats are scheduled to have their first game on August 28, 2020, against the Hayti Indians. The Bobcats captured their fifth straight district title last season.
Record of Last Year
The Bobcats record last year was 11-2. They would have gotten a record of 12-1, but the Valle Catholic Warriors defeated the Bobcats once again.
New Rules
Last year the Bobcats were in a Class 3 when they lost to the Valle Catholic Warriors. Due to a new classification ruling, the Bobcats are now in a Class 1. Head Coach Billy Webber had something to say to that,
At the same time, you’re losing a rivalry, and that also means someone from Class 2 will likely move down. There will still be plenty of good competition that we will have to go through to get where we want to be. [1]
Starters Returning
Thayer has nine starters returning from last year. Among them is star quarterback Jayce Haven, who is in his last year in high school. Jayce Haven got into the end zone 27 times, rushed for 1,046 yards in 135 carries, he completed 59 of 124 passes and threw for 947 yards. While doing all that on the offensive side, Haven was just as dominant on the defensive secondary. Haven got a team-high of nine interceptions, sixty-four tackles, and one defensive score.
The other starters returning are Jordan Madden, Jackson Willison, Logan Doss, Lane Grimes, Jesse White, Chris Cray, Landry Pitts, and Griffin Willison.
Defense Is Great Too
The defense is also good as well. The defense is one of the reasons the Bobcats won so many games. The Bobcats held the opponents to a 11.3 point average per game.
Word From The Coach
Head Coach Billy Webber said,
Our defense will be awfully good. It has been for some time and will need to continue to be so. We will have to continue to throw the ball with efficiency and maintain our run game. We have to make sure to keep our feet on the ground. We have to continue to work, but it is nice to have two classes back-to-back that are hard working and talented. [2]
The Thayer Bobcats are scheduled to have their first game on August 28, 2020, against the Hayti Indians at the Thayer High School at 7:00 pm.
