The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) announced early data showing 16,575 deer were harvested between Oct. 6-8 during the state’s new firearms early-antlerless deer season. Franklin, Howell, and Ripley accounted for the top three harvest counties, with 489, 454, and 437 deer harvested, respectively. Oregon County was not far behind, with 401 deer harvested.

Reason For Early Season

MDC Cervid Program Supervisor Jason Isabelle said in a statement on October 10, 2023,

With deer numbers being at desired levels in most counties but continuing to increase, additional antlerless harvest is needed to stabilize the deer population [1].

He went on to say,

The goal of the new firearms early antlerless portion is to help increase antlerless deer harvest prior to the November portion of firearms season when many hunters focus on harvesting bucks [2].

Reason For Timing

He explained that the early season dates were chosen to provide hunting opportunities when weather conditions are usually favorable. Oftentimes November season brings cold, wet weather that inhibits many hunters. This early season was to minimize conflicts with archery hunters who get out earlier in the season but are unused to working around firearm hunters for deer.

This season had beautiful weather: cool and dry to get the deer moving at convenient times.

Meanwhile, archery season continues until firearm season begins on November 11, 2023.
