While the cold weather lingers outdoors, it is easy to sit near a window and watch the world pass by, waiting for the arrival of spring. With that, one does pass the time watching birds as they scatter from one tree to the next, one bush to the ground. While the colorful birds stand out against a white background, how to get any birds to your yard may be the proper question. What food are they searching for? Where do they prefer hiding? The experts from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) are here to help.

Bird-feeding is a popular hobby that anyone can enjoy. However, the first key to bird feeding enjoyment is to be able to attract birds to your backyard. The MDC is hosting a virtual program entitled “Attracting Winter Birds.” In this class, people can get tips on attracting birds to feeders in their yards at this time of year. They can learn what species of birds are in the area in winter months.

This program will be on January 16 from 11 a.m. to noon.

The staff of MDC’s Shoal Creek Conservation in Joplin is putting this class on.

MDC Naturalist Jessie Ballard will provide tips on increasing bird viewing pleasure by providing the types of feeders and food that can attract various species to a backyard.

This program is open to all ages. People can register for this program at:
