class=\"et_pb_title_container\">\n<p><span class=\"published\">On Thursday, September 26, 2024,<\/span> U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, along with U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/outreach.senate.gov\/iqextranet\/iqClickTrk.aspx?&amp;cid=SenHawley&amp;crop=14502QQQ9317088QQQ8136449QQQ8019990&amp;report_id=&amp;redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.hawley.senate.gov%2fwp-content%2fuploads%2f2024%2f09%2fHawley-Bipartisan-Bill-Expanding-Nationwide-Background-Checks-for-Childcare-Workers.pdf&amp;redir_log=892995241619992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduced<\/a>\u00a0bipartisan legislation to ensure all contractors working with children are authorized to have to a nationwide background check.<\/p>\n<h3>New Bill<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_post_content et_pb_post_content_0_tb_body\">\n<p>The new bill, which would amend the\u00a0<em>National Child Protection Act of 1993<\/em>(NCPA), would expand mandatory nationwide background checks for all individuals\u00a0under contract with a school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBackground checks for childcare workers are common sense.\u00a0 My legislation with Senator Durbin fixes an oversight in the law and will help keep American kids safe.\u00a0 Parents should be assured that everyone who works with their kids, even contractors, has been thoroughly vetted,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said Hawley.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen parents drop their kids off at school, they shouldn\u2019t have to worry if their children are safe in the care of the school\u2019s faculty.\u00a0 While the Child Protection Improvements Act was passed to keep children safe, it created an inadvertent complication in securing nationwide background checks for all personnel with unsupervised access to children, namely contractors hired by schools,\u201d <strong>said Durbin.<\/strong> \u201cSchools and other state agencies often rely on contractors for many services geared toward children, including safe transportation.\u00a0 I\u2019m introducing bipartisan legislation with Senator Hawley to correct the current patchwork approach to securing nationwide background checks for contractors who work with children.<\/p>\n<h3>Change<\/h3>\n<p>\u201dSenator Hawley\u2019s bipartisan legislation would reverse the narrowing of nationwide background checks inadvertently put in place by the\u00a0<em>Child Protection Improvements Act of 2018<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Full bill text is available\u00a0<a
