Alton, Mo. – With the fall weather comes different hunting seasons. The actual weather does not deter the hunters. They come out at the proper time to bag the animal. Here are the results.

Youth Deer Season

Youth deer season just completed its time, being open November 2-3. While rain did fall on Saturday in Oregon and surrounding counties, the young hunters were out early. The youth hunters harvested 13,923 deer in one weekend. That is 2,700 more than last year! Although Oregon County was not among the top five for deer harvested, Howell County had the second-largest number of deer harvested. Oregon County hunters did harvest 159 deer. Great job, kids!

Turkey Numbers

Missouri’s fall turkey season was open from October 1 to 31. During that time, hunters scoured the woods and harvested 1,857 birds, down almost 400 from last year. This year, we encountered a dry season with no rain but dry, rustling leaves all month, hindering the hunter’s movement. Although Oregon County was not among the top counties harvesting the birds, they did harvest seven turkeys. Congratulations!

Bear Season

Missouri’s bear season was open from October 21 to 30. In it, hunters harvested seventeen bears. Of the 400 chosen to participate in the bear hunts, 319 purchased their tags. Of the nears harvested, thirteen were harvested through firearms, one using archery and one with a crossbow. Those in charge attribute the successful near hunt to dryer conditions, encouraging the bears to move more, seeking water. Super job hunters!

We appreciate all of those who spend time harvesting wildlife. This keeps many off the roadways, endangering lives in vehicle accidents.
