Thursday is a National Day of Mourning to remember President Carter and the good he did. President Biden issued an executive order proclaiming the day, reiterating that flags will fly at half-mast for 30 days, and federal offices will be closed. With that in mind, what is closed and what is open on Thursday, January 9? You will probably want to plan.

Mail

The most significant closure for our area is the post office. All postal services are suspended for the day, and deliveries will be stopped, similar to a holiday.

Schools

As school calendars are made before the year begins, this will not affect students, and schools will remain open.

Library

The library board also approved their calendar of closures. The library will remain open on Thursday.

Banks

Although banks do have much discretion with the federal government, most banks will remain open on Thursday.

Courts

The Supreme Court and many federal courts will be closed on Thursday. If you have a pending court case for that day, you might want to confirm that the court will not be adjourned.

Parks

National parks will remain open.

So, while the country mourns the death of a past President, most businesses will remain open. Grocery stores and gas stations stay open. Flags will fly at half mast for 30 days, like when President Reagan died.
