Alton, Mo. – On Saturday, August 8, 2020, the local market was active. Chickens sold cheap, but ducks were cheaper. This is in sharp contrast to the high bids for each chicken this spring. Even with lower final bids, many people participated in bidding on each item. Saturday watermelons sold high. All of this at the MO/Ark Livestock Auction House.

Chickens were running approximately $3.00 while ducks sold for about $.50 each. But that wasn’t all that sold Saturday. Soft bunnies of differing ages and colors awaited their turn on the auction block. Watermelons sold for a whopping $9.00 each. These were large yellow and red melons. After the small animal bidding, guns and bows sold. And after that came the goat bids.

The auction house also sold concessions and a table was set up selling homemade goods.

Vehicles of all sorts, mostly pickup trucks, some even hauling trailers, cars, and vans filled the parking lot. Customers travel from Springfield and places outside of Oregon County travelled just to attend this auction.

Inside, a crowd of hopeful buyers filled the chairs and bleachers. Customers came ready to buy and the auctioneer didn’t disappoint them. He spoke fast and kept the animals moving.

The auctions are held twice a month usually the second and fourth Saturdays. However, this month there is only one scheduled due to the normal heat.

The next scheduled auction is Saturday, September 12, 2020. Each auction begins at 11:00 a.m.

The Mo/Ark Livestock Auction house is located on AA Highway, about 2 miles down from Highway 19. There is ample room for the average small-time farmer and a trailer to work his way around without getting stuck or losing his livestock.

Around back are 48 pens of varying sizes to hold almost any type of animal. Duane Dawson, the owner, did joke about selling camels, although they did auction off a llama once!

Their specialty is small caged animals.

On Saturday, August 8, 2020, the market was active.
