Alton, Mo. – On Saturday, August 29, 2020, Wes Conrad did a demonstration on how to make a birdhouse from gourds. This event took place at Tucker Creek Park at the Alton Farmer’s Market. Wes showed the usefulness of gourds in helping wildlife. In 15 minute increments, he soaked, scrubbed, and drilled a gourd.

It is preferable to choose a gourd without blemishes. Soak it in water for about 15 minutes. You may need to cover it with a towel to make sure it stays wet. You don’t want the gourd to float and dry out.

Fifteen minutes later, Wes dried off the gourd. Using a copper pot scrubber, he scrubbed all over the gourd for about 5 minutes. He suggested using water to rinse as you go. You don’t want slimy skin; make it smooth. It’s ok to sand at this point, but it’s a lot messier.

Next, dry off the gourd. Set it aside to air dry. This should take 15-30 minutes.

Now pull out the sandpaper. Rub all over to remove the fuzzies and imperfections.

Decide on the placement of the hole. Then decide on the size of the hole. A wren needs a 1.25-inch hole while a bluebird needs a 1.50-inch hole. Bring out a drill and carefully make the hole. Then remove seeds and anything else inside. It can be cleaned with a finger or a tool. Keep this tool handy for winter when the gourd should be cleaned from all of the year’s nesting materials.

At this point, find the lowest point on the gourd and drill three small holes for drainage in inclement weather.

Drill two small holes at the top. Baling wire works well to hold the birdhouse, but that is a personal preference.

The final step is spraying the birdhouse with clear gloss enamel. Good to use two coats to bring out the full color of the gourd.

On Saturday, August 29, 2020, Wes Conrad did a demonstration on how to make a birdhouse from gourds.

[193
243,225,214,251,201,264
The First 15 Minutes
