Alton, Mo. – The Alton Chamber of Commerce met at the Alton United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 20, 2025. Those present did not stray from business; much was accomplished during the short lunch break. This is just a reminder that anyone can attend and speak at the chamber meetings.
Walnut Festival
Some may think it too early to think about the Walnut Festival happening in October, but for everything to run smoothly, planning needs to begin now. First, there was a discussion on bands and organizing the music. Without music, shoppers do not linger around the square. Next, the discussion led to vendors. A vendor application letter will be sent out this spring. Also, a vendor committee was created to follow up and assist vendors along the way. The chamber is looking into a bike giveaway during the festival.
Next, the talk led to Friday evening’s festivities. The Alton Public School Foundation will be heading up this year’s Cruise-In. We had a good response last year, and they hope to make it bigger! The Chamber will do the run on Friday evening. They are looking at themes for the run. They discussed safety issues as several vehicles drove through the area where runners were going. The chamber made a run committee. They plan on advertising early to get a good turnout.
Besides these issues, the chamber discussed insurance for the event.
As plans begin for this annual event and people see the organization, excitement is building.
Pocket Park
Pocket Park is applying for grants now. If a grant comes through, they plan to have picnic tables, a handicapped walkway, plants, and a stage.
Tax Status
The chamber is working through the tax filings.
Next Year
It was brought up that 2026 is our country’s 250th birthday. As President Trump is planning a large celebration, perhaps Alton can do something. It was even suggested that music and something be played at Pocket Park. Nothing was decided definitely at this time.
