Alton, Mo. –At this time of year, one has a tendency to think of others. Our funds deplete quickly as our eyes are raised. But a great way to help the needy is to ring the Salvation Army bell.
History of Bell Ringers
For over tow hundred years people have stood outside in all kinds of weather, ringing the now-famous Salvation Army bells. With the also famous red bucket at hand, attention is drawn by the sound of Christmas bells to the bucket. Local and non-local residents can donate money to help the poor.
Who Is In Charge?
Locally, inhabitants of Alton can volunteer to ring the bells. Charlie Trantham, from the Freewill Baptist Church in town, is heading up volunteers. Those wishing to help can call him at 417-270-0097. Larry Sisco can also be contacted for questions or volunteer information. His number is 817-706-1896. The bell-ringing happens in front of Harps Grocery Store on Highway 160 west. This ringing goes from the day after Thanksgiving until December 24.
Details Of Ringing
Ringers can help almost any time of the day, when the store is open. They get a bright red apron to wear as a uniform. They also get a bell or two to ring. Sliding the bucket outside next to them is the only “work” required. Otherwise, this is a time to help the unfortunate while seeing friends come to the store. Last year over $13,500 was raised to help local schools, senior centers, and Christmas.
