Richard Simmons was born on July 12, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His real name was Milton Teagle Simmons, but he adopted the name Richard growing up. [2] In the 1970s, he started pursuing a career in fitness and soon opened a gym in Beverly Hills, California. During his life, he published several books.

Along with having his own gym, Simmons also filmed him and a class doing aerobics. One of his best-known videos being Sweatin to the Oldies.
