The AltonMo.com field team went around to local Fourth of July celebrations-Alton, Thomasville, and Thayer- and polled the locals on United States history. Four questions were asked to the locals: “How many stripes are on the U.S. flag?” “What was signed on July 4, 1776?” “Who wrote ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’?” and “What is the most famous symbolic landmark in America today?” Here are the percentages to the answers (percentages are rounded).
First Question
The first question asked was “How many stripes are on the U.S. flag?” In total, some answers that were not correct included three, fifty-three, six, and seven.

Second Question
The next question asked was “What was signed on July 4, 1776?” While that should have been a given, fewer citizens knew this answer than the first question asked.

“The Star-Spangled Banner”
“Who wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner?” was the third question. This was the least known question out of all the questions.

Symbolic Landmark
The final question asked was “What is the most famous symbolic landmark in America today?” While some of the people did need a charade or the hint that it’s in New York, a lot people knew the answer to this question.
