The feared coronavirus is still causing havoc among those who simply want to live their lives. It’s making its presence known in the library once more. The Alton Public Library has again altered its rules for its patrons. One needs to be aware of the rules before heading into the facility.

Mask Mandates In Alton

Here in Alton, Missouri, mask restrictions are lax. The citizens do not want to be encumbered by masks everywhere they go. Although the virus has stayed in the county since March, residents realize that mask-wearing does little to improve people’s everyday lives. One goes about around town wearing one if he desires, not wearing one if he does not desire.

Previous Library Restrictions

Shortly after the virus began, the library closed for a time. This was to ensure the health and safety of its employees and its patrons. Upon reopening, the library put bins in the front of the facility to receive books and media that were checked out. Large clear plastic barriers are in place at the desk to ensure protection for all involved. Furthermore, employees wear masks, in case the germs spread from the patron, through the plexiglass, to the face of the employee.

New Restrictions

Added to these censures, a notice is now upon the door. First, one sees a large stop sign. That is an attention-getter. Next one reads down and sees that masks are mandated for entry. That would be nice to know before returning materials or checking new materials out. Also, upon entering the library, one must sanitize his hands.

Further Restrictions

A new addition to the restriction at the library is time limits. The library is asking that patrons spend no more than 30 minutes in the library. Basically, do your business and get out. They are limiting people in the facility to 10 individuals. As a student who needs any kind of research material, he needs to work fast. For someone browsing for a book, grab something quick and get out. This is not a welcome feeling.

Local citizens and taxpayers are looking forward to the day when life returns to normal, not a new normal, but one free.
