Spiders are a necessary part of life. They eat so many undesirable bugs. But do we want to live close to them? How can we choose which should be ‘inside’ spiders versus ‘outside’ spiders? Why do they come inside when the weather gets cooler? The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) experts are here to help.

What Is Happening?

Missouri has more than 300 species of spiders. While you might jump if one is found in an unexpected place, most are harmless. Spiders are fascinating short predators that can be found throughout the environment. Because of their value, MDC is hosting a free virtual class all about spiders. This program is called These Are the Spiders in Your House.

This workshop will focus on the most common spiders that people see in and near homes, including cellar spiders, jumping spiders, house spiders, and the brown recluse. MDC’s Burr Oak Woods Nature Center Assistant Manager Stephanie Kemp will talk about the role spiders play in nature. Then, she will offer tips on how to identify them.

How Soon Is This Class?

The virtual program is from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, October 19.

Who Can Attend?

The program is open to participants ages 12 and older. Registration is required. You can register here. There is no charge to attend.

Where Is This?

As this is a virtual class, you can watch from the comfort of your own home.

As the temperature drops, wildlife like spiders and mice look for a warmer environment. This class can help you understand more about indoor spiders.
