Alton, Mo. – Michael and Betty Sullivan celebrate 50 years of marriage on October 19. That is a long time for two people to stay together. Although they live in Birch Tree, they attend Riverton Baptist Church regularly. AltonMo.com tracked them down for an interview at the Walnut Festival.
History
Michael and Betty began their relationship many years ago. As with most fathers wanting only the best for their daughters, Betty’s dad was not encouraging their quick relationship. While not supportive of their union, Betty’s dad did consent to their marriage.
The Date
They chose October 19 because it is the Sweetest Day, a time to give gifts to someone kind to you. Fifty years ago, they married on a Saturday. This year, it is also on a Saturday.
Struggles
Michael said quite plainly how they made it through arguments or disagreements,
You see. I wear a hearing aid and so does Betty. It’s hard to argue with someone who can’t hear.
In a day in age when marriages last less than the wedding, a fifty-year celebration marriage is inspiring.
Family
While Mike and Betty never had children of their own, they had a good and terrific church family, raising many people in the knowledge of the Lord.
They are a happy couple taking care of each other. With seemingly few health ailments, they advance on their way, best friends for life. They weathered times like retirement and self-satisfaction, trusting that the good Lord above made everything for Himself.
May they continue to live richly together.
