Solar eclipse

Alton, Mo. – In April of this year, the Great American Eclipse will cross over Alton, Missouri. Because this is the last total solar eclipse most people will see in their lifetime, visitors from across the country and the world are coming to our area to participate. With that, they come with expectations. To avoid disappointment, here are a few thoughts about Alton, Missouri, aimed toward our visitors.

Electricity

First off, you will not find any electric vehicle charging stations in Oregon County. We rely on gas and diesel-powered vehicles.

As the eclipse happens in the spring, be aware of sudden storms. Flash floods happen quickly along the river. With all of our trees, branches break in strong winds. The power goes out. Most locals have adapted to these circumstances. We urge visitors to bring flashlights.

Wildlife

Most of the county is uninhabited. Because of that, there is wildlife. One may see bears, skunks, armadillos, and groundhogs, depending on the weather. Most assuredly, you will see deer, so be careful when driving. If the weather is warm, ticks could be out. Take precautions before coming by purchasing deet repellants and using them when you go outdoors.

Not All Places Have Cellular Service

This may seem quite strange for those coming from large cities. If you go down to the river, many places have no cell service. If something happens and you want to connect with someone, the phone is useless. And it is usually a long walk back to civilization. Honestly, not even roadways always carry cell service. And pay phone booths have gone along the wayside.

Conclusion

Alton, Missouri, and all of Oregon County are beautiful places to visit. Enjoy the quiet, the calm, the relaxed attitude. Think about stepping back in time. All the while, be alert for the dangers.
