While the talk is all about deer firearm season, MDC (Missouri Department of Conservation) is announcing the results of fall firearm turkey season by county. Missouri held its fall turkey firearm season through October. Oregon County did not do too badly.
Numbers
Missouri hunters harvested 2,219 turkeys during October. The top three counties with the number of birds harvested are Dent County with 86 birds harvested, Crawford County with 82, and Washington County with 72. Locally, Oregon County harvested 16 birds. Howell was close to us with 17 birds harvested.
Season
Turkey season using firearms ran October 1, 2023, through October 31, 2023. Turkeys are challenging to hunt because of their excellent eyesight. They detect the slightest movement and flee the area.
Archery
Turkey archery season opened in September. While it is closed during firearm deer season, it reopens on November 22, 2023, and continues until January 15, 2024.
Great job to all who harvested the birds, and even to those who attempted. The harvest will make a nice addition to the Thanksgiving meal.
