No rain recently means dry air. With the winds crossing through, fire dangers are announced, warning people against uncontrolled burns. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has suggestions on whether or not you have a prescribed burn. They offer suggestions for unprepared fires, too.
Don’t
This seems simple, but with dry weather and strong winds, little is needed for a small fire to get out of control. We should wait until we receive measurable rain before burning our fields.
Off-Road Driving
Driving your truck or ATV into your overgrown field can be hazardous. The hot engine touches the tall, dry grass, igniting it quickly. Although unplanned, you now have a brush fire. Park and drive on dirt pathways instead.
Campfires
Along with cook-out grills, these need feet of cleared land around them. A small spark can go a long way. Have a hose or bucket of water nearby for emergencies.
Help
Call for help quickly when you see trouble. It is better to have assistance and have the danger soon removed than to wait and let it get out of control.
Warnings
Heed the red flag warnings. Experts issue them for your and your neighbor’s safety. The rains will soon come, offering ample time for burning fields. Until then, caution is needed.
