While we enjoy fall festivals in the area, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) says a festival of colors can now be seen. Along the highways and field edges, vegetation is highlighted by bright shades of dark red, orange, and brilliant yellow. Capturing the beauty of fall colors can resemble a puzzle.
Cooler temperatures bring apple cider and pumpkins, cool breezes, and rustling dry corn stalks. Fall is here. Hot summer temperatures are past; winter snows have not arrived. This is the time of year for bonfires and s’mores.
The MDC encourages residents to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty. While trees are predominately green and just beginning to turn in the Alton area, other parts of the state are well into the fall colors.
Suggestions For Sightseeing Now
The MDC has recommendations for those wanting to take a fall drive to see the beauty [1]:
- St. Francois mountains
- Mississippi River hills
- The Arcadia Valley (Ironton)
- Ste. Genevieve/Farmington area
- Along Highways 34, 72, 61, 51, 60, 67, 25 and Interstate 55
These are along the Mississippi River. The MDC also recommends visiting a conservation area. Most have information about colors and timing.
No matter what activity brings you to the great outdoors, take time to enjoy the sunshine, fresh air, and enjoy the fall colors wherever you can.
