Do you have a live Christmas tree? Now that Christmas is over along with much of the celebrating, what are your plans for the tree? Although no longer in the house, the tree has many benefits.
Wildlife
Setting your tree outdoors away from the house is an open invitation to small animals and birds. They can nest in the branches, or run there for cover from large predators. A handful of birdseed is even more inviting. Placing the tree outside a window offers hours of satisfactory nature watching.
Plant Protection
An evergreen tree can be placed alongside bushes, hedges, and other evergreens to protect them from winter winds. Placing teh tree on the south side of the plant also protects it from a harsh winter sun. One can clip the branches- or use wreath branches- to lay over bulbs and perennials. This helps hold soil temperatures, especially when spring has uneven temperatures.
Outdoor Decoration
Prolonging the holiday season, you can set the tree upright. Then you can add strings of cranberries and popcors around it. This can become a fun family tradition.
Chipping
Once warmer weather arrives, you can chip and shred the tree. This is good for the landscape.
Pond Life
If you have a pond, you can even put the tree into the pond. It’s a great habitat for fish.
With all of these ideas, you may want to try two. Go ahead and ask your neighbor for his used live tree. He may be surprised at all the use left in it.
