In May, AltonMo.com announced an outdoor art contest for Missourians called Show-Me-Neighborhood-Art. People from around the state participated, beautifying their yards and, thus, their community. The University of Missouri Extension Office in Oregon County has announced the winners.

What The Aim Was

This art-focused outreach program showcased residents’ creative talents and promoted the importance of public art in building a strong sense of community and belonging. Regardless of skill level, all were encouraged to participate and contribute to the vibrant arts scene in their neighborhoods. People from across the state completed their artwork. Residents from Springfield won several prizes. One did not need to decorate the entire yard, just part of it.

This art program beautified the communities and demonstrated special information. Seventy-three sites registered their artwork. One thousand one hundred eighty-two registered online votes judged them. Plus, $3,000 was given away in prize money. The prizes are from other Missouri artists.

Among those participating in Show Me Art Week, 75 percent confirmed that being part of the event added to their sense of belonging and love for their community, which was one of the goals.

They had such a good turnout for this year’s contest that they plan on hosting it again next year. It will be held at the same time: the first two weeks of June.
