During the Christmas season, many households hang a wreath. But Why? What is the significance? Why doesn’t everyone hang a wreath? Is there a certain time it should be hung? Here’s what we found.
Meaning Of Wreaths
Like many Christmas decorations, a wreath has religious significance. For some Christians, the wreath was a visual reminder of Jesus’ suffering. The wreath itself represented the crown of thorns worn at the crucifixion. The use of evergreen branches represents eternal life. Ancient German folklore links the greenery to continuity and sustained life during dark winter months [1]. The evergreen still has life when most plants are dormant. Other cultures like the Romans and Greeks saw wreaths as a mark of power or conquest [2].
When To Hang The Wreath
The actual date to hang a wreath varies from person to person, with reasons just as varied. The most common date for hanging the wreath is December 1. However, that is not a ‘must do’ date. Some households create their own unique wreaths with the branches pruned for the Christmas tree. This means that one must have the tree, first. Once that happens and the wreath is made, the evergreen branches will need cold temperatures, best suited for doors facing out. Next, if you do decide to store it until a particular date, place it out and away to prevent it being crushed [3].
What Goes On A Wreath?
Typically, wreaths are made from the pruned branches of an evergreen. The evergreen is the Christmas tree that gets pruned before bringing into the house. From there, the branches can be tied together with twine, rope, fishing line, or other material. Glue guns come in handy for thatching berries, pine cones, bows, or any decoration you choose.
So this season, go into the decorating with more knowledge as to why you do certain things. Perhaps this is the year to begin a new tradition- of wreath hanging.
