Fruitcake has been around for centuries, being around in ancient Roman time. The Romans mad it with pomegranate seeds, pine nuts, and raisins that were mixed into barley mash. Fruitcakes were also made in the Middle Ages. Soon it spread all over Europe with different ingredients being added. The food was eaten at weddings and at Christmas.
Who Eats It
Many countries around the world eat fruitcake. Australia eats it year round. In Ireland, the fruitcake contains different object signifying a different fortune for the person who finds it. [1] Most countries eat it around Christmas. Some of the other countries that have fruitcake include Germany, Spain, Romania, and Portugal.
Ingredients
Some common ingredients in fruitcake are candied or dried fruits, nuts, and spices. Alcohol is sometimes added, but not always. In the United Kingdom, it may be iced and decorated.
