This year Missouri is commemorating its bicentennial. With that cities and communities around the state are hosting fun and family friendly events, specific to that town or area. Here are a few to get you started.
Appleton
Appleton, Missouri is having an interest, one-of-a-kind event: A Whisker Contest! On August 12, 2021, the city hosts the Whisker contest [1]. Men display their whiskers, whether they are new this year or old.
Clinton
A few days preceding the whisker contest, Clinton is holding a community old-fashioned picnic. This happens on August 8, 2021 [2]. The Clinton Historical Society is hosting and planning this event. The public is invited for a time of food, drinks, music, and games.
Allen/ Moberly
Moberly, Missouri has a unique item to reenact: the first Missouri Train Robbery. From September 25-26, the Allen Train Robbery replays the actual event. During this act, junior high youth will portray the Confederates who stop the train to take the gold. Passengers will receive a gold covered chocolate coin [3].
Springfield
The Dickerson Park Zoo is teaming up with MSU to host bicentennial themed activities. Of course, they will be bear-themed. This happens August 9-15 [4].
Fireworks
Most communities are planning spectacular fireworks displays. Feel free to hit several cities for great displays of light and celebrations.
