HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Association) has different contests year-round. From now until April 1st, 2023, a poem and video contest are being held by them. This brings the creativity out of homeschoolers.
Poem
There are three categories for the poem contest. The maximum length for all the categories is sixteen lines, and they must have a discernable rhyme pattern. Individuals can submit up to three poems.
- For kids 7-10, they write a poem about what life would be if they were invisible.
- For kids 11-14, they write a poem that contains all three of the elements in one of the lists: (1) A plane ticket, a juice box, a cave; (2) A violin, an old parachute, a beach; or (3) A coffee cup, a mysterious letter, a garden.
- For the last group, kids 15-19, they write a poem that praises something underappreciated or disliked. [1]
Video
The video contest is a new one to HSLSA; in fact, this is the first year that they’re having it.
- For kids 7-10: they’re going to set up an interview with one of their teachers. In the video, show us what his or her favorite subjects are to teach!Â
- For kids 11-14: In your backyard, they meet a friendly alien who has never seen Earth before. In a video, show us how you would explain Earth to the alien!
- For kids 15-19: You have been assigned to share a modern retelling of a classic story. In a video, show us how you would do this! [2]
You can submit up to two videos, with the minimum length being one minute and the maximum of two minutes. You can use anything to record your video with, whether it’s a phone, camera, or another filming device. HSLDA accepts only Youtube and Vimeo links.
Participants
Homeschoolers ages 7 to 19 can participate in these contests. Students enrolled in public schools at home or virtual public charter schools are not eligible.
Prizes
In the video contest, three winners and four honorable mentions in each category will be selected. For both contests, the winners will receive up to $500.
Entry Date
The contests started on February 1, 2023, and will end on April 1, 2023.
