Alton, Mo. – Missouri is now 200 years old. For her birthday, cities and communities had ice cream socials in honor of our state dessert, the ice cream cone. Among the towns were Alton, Thomasville, and Thayer, Missouri.
Alton, Mo
The Southern Bank Alton Branch gave out free ice cream sandwiches to anyone who wanted them. Whether people were depositing money or they came just for the ice cream sandwiches, they got the ice cream. The ice cream was available from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.
The Alton Senior Center was scheduled to have an ice cream social, but due to water issues, they cancelled the event. The center plans to be up and running by Monday, August 16, 2021, but that could change. Since the Alton Senior Center was closed, the workers went down to Thayer’s senior center and helped out.
Thayer
Both the Thayer Senior Center and Thayer Elementary School PTO had ice cream socials as well.
Senior Center
The Thayer Senior Center held their ice cream social at 12:30 pm. The seniors and those who ate there were welcome to get a bowl of ice cream. About a dozen seniors were there.
Elementary PTO
The Thayer Elementary Parent Teacher Organization also had an ice cream social from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Kids and adults were welcome. They offered vanilla and chocolate ice cream with toppings of chocolate chips, caramel, chocolate syrup, strawberry syrup, marshmallows, whipped topping, and sprinkles. About two dozen kids and adults came during the time AltonMo.com was there.
They were also selling “It’s a great day to be a Bobcat” shirts for $15.00.
Thomasville
Thomasville held their ice cream social on August 10, 2021. They had chocolate and vanilla ice cream. They also had cookies and brownies. You can read the full article here.
Asking Questions
The AltonMo.com team went around to Thomasville, Alton, and Thayer and asked the people two questions for Missouri’s Bicentennial. The questions were as follows: What is your favorite type of ice cream? and What do you like best about Missouri?
