Christmas is now about three weeks behind us. Around that time, there are a lot of returns to retail stores for unwanted Christmas presents. Several big retail stores have started charging fees for returns.
The Stores
Some stores that are charging return fees are J.C. Penney, Macy’s, Zara, and T.J. Maxx, to name a few.
- J.C. Penney is charging $8 flat fee.
- Macy’s is charging $9.99 plus tax.
- Zara is charging $3.95.
- T.J. Maxx is charging $10.99.
- Abercrombie is charging $7.
- J.Crew is charging $7.50. [1]
Amazon also has a return fee of $1 if a Kohl’s, an Amazon-owned Whole Foods, or Amazon Fresh store is closer to your delivery address than the UPS store where you dropped the package off. [2]
How To Avoid It
Several ways you can avoid paying a return fee are by making sure you read the reviews, have the correct size, and make sure you really want the item. Most of the time, you can avoid return fees by either returning the item at the store (not by mail) or joining the store’s membership program. [3]
No Return Fees
Although there are several stores that are starting to charge return fees, several stores are not. Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Athleta, Nordstrom, Sephora, and Lululemon are some of the stores that do not charge return fees. [4]
