The worldwide pandemic of coronavirus has people staying indoors while trying to boost their immunity. Fresh fruits and vegetables are kitchen essentials. One favorite in all this is orange juice. Orange juice futures rose more than 20% this month.
Why Orange Juice?
Orange juice is known for its high vitamin C content. It also has potassium, folate, and magnesium. Some juices have added calcium and vitamin D. Orange juice is low in calories but high in antioxidants. [1] It stores well in the refrigerator.
Will It Fight Off Covid-19?
In one word-no. It does boost immunity and has other health benefits. But as a whole, it does not. The World Health Organization stresses hand washing and isolation as the best prevention.
Possible Downsides
Orange juice is often high in calories and sugar. Unlike fresh fruit, it does not have fiber. Put together; orange juice consumption could lead to weight gain and all the health issues with obesity.
Worldwide Use
The United States ships citrus around the world. While the pandemic is slowing shipments to foreign countries, citrus growers are doing their best to stay ahead of orders. Tanker space and airline space is limited. The United States and Brazil are trying to keep workers going through this disease.
All things considered, orange juice has overall health benefits if drunk in moderation. It should not be used as a defense mechanism against the coronavirus.
