Citizens of Oregon County were polled by the AltonMo.com field team on United States history at the 2022 Fourth of July celebrations. Four questions were asked: “How many stripes are on the U.S. flag?” “What was signed on July 4, 1776?” “Who wrote ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’?” and “What is the most famous symbolic landmark in America today?” On a previous article, the poll percentages were for all the cities. In this article, it will be the individual cities of Alton, Thomasville, and Thayer (percentages are rounded). Try your knowledge on these questions. Stripes Anyone?
Thomasville citizens showed off their knowledge on the first question, “How many stripes are on the U.S. flag?”
Alton
For Alton, some answers that were not correct were six and seven stripes.

Alton was almost split in half on those who knew the answer and those who did not. One person said as an answer that some people escaped from prison.

Thomasville once again proved that they are smart with the majority knowing the answer. Another answer for some residents was the Constitution was signed on that day.

Out of all the questions, the “Who wrote ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’?” question was the most difficult with the majority not knowing the answer.

Some citizens polled, answered with presidents like Abraham Lincoln and Harry Truman.

Presidents seemed to be in the mind of residents as one of Thayer’s citizens answered with George Washington.

Famous Landmark
The final question, which got a lot of correct answers, was “What is the most famous symbolic landmark in America today?” While most people did get it correct, some residents needed a charade or a hint of it’s in New York.
Alton
Some answers the AltonMo.com team received were the Trump Tower, White House, Empire State Building, and the Twin Towers.
