On September 11, 2001, our nation was attacked through our own tools. By hijacking planes, terrorists flew them into our World Trade Centers, the Pentagon, and a thwarted attempt into a field in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people died that day. Many more died following the attacks due to related illnesses (like breathing the ash and dust).
Short Timeline
Four commercial airlines take off from the Northeast airports. By 8:46 am, the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. By 9:03 am, the second plane crashed into the South Tower. Continuing on to 9:37, an additional plane crashed into the Pentagon. The fourth plane that was hijacked was overtaken by Americans and crashed into a Pennsylvania field amidst the struggle [1]. Due to structural damages, the two Twin Towers collapse, killing those inside as well as emergency workers coming to assist.
Historical Day
We mark this day because we were attacked on American soil. So many innocent lives were lost. This was not the military fighting for our freedom in a war. Instead, it was average people going to work that were killed. September 11 has become Patriot’s Day. We hold six minutes of silence, remembering when each World Trade Center was struck and collapsed, the crash on the Pentagon, and the crash in the Pennsylvania field.
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum, closes in the morning to all except those who lost a loved one in the incident. Each year at the memorial, family members read aloud the names of those killed in the bombings [2]. This was a tragic day in history, one that the entire wolrd noted.
