Alton, Mo. – Tuesday, August 4, 2020, is primary election day across the country, including Missouri. As we prepare to cast our ballots, it is good to keep a few things in mind.
Who?
First, who can vote? Any registered voter is allowed and encouraged to vote. A U.S. citizen who meets the state’s requirements and is 18 years old or over on election day is permitted to vote. Notwithstanding, non-citizens, mentally incapacitated individuals, and those with a felony conviction are not allowed to vote.
One needs to be pre-registered to vote on election day. That is, the registration deadline was July 8, 2020. At that time, one needed to be 17 1/2 years old to register. One does need to be a Missouri resident to vote.
When?
Polls in Missouri open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. on August 4, 2020.
Where?
Oregon County has several polling places throughout the areas. In Alton, the polling place is the First Baptist Church, on Highway 19, heading south out of town. What?
Missourians will have a number of choices. First to vote, one declares what party he wants to vote: Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, or Green. Each individual then chooses a candidate from that party to run in the General Election in November. Also on this August’s ballot is a proposed amendment that expands Medicaid.
Why?
Voting is a blessing we inherited from our forefathers. As many countries do not have any election, let alone free ones. as citizens of the United States, we have the right to vote enumerated in the 15th amendment. It is not something to be taken lightly.
So be sure to get out and vote. Tell our state elected officials what you think of their work by reelecting them or booting them out of office. This election determines who runs in the general elections on November 3, 2020.
