On January 23, 2022, truckers from Canada started a truck convoy headed to Ottawa, the capital of Canada, in protest of vaccine passports. On January 29, 2022, the convoy reached the capital and is peacefully protesting.
The Start Of It
When it was announced that truck drivers that crossed the U.S.-Canadian border had to have the COVID-19 vaccine, truckers decided to go to the capital and protest. [1] The truck convoy started on Sunday, January 23, 2022, on the west coast of the country.
The Convoy
As the group of trucks traveled across the country to Ottawa, more and more trucks joined them- even cars joined them. Some truck drivers from the United States also joined the procession. When they passed through cities, Canadians lined the road and cheered them on. On the 26th, there were over 10,000 vehicles that joined in on the 62 mile-long convoy. [2]
Reaching Ottawa
On Saturday, January 29, 2022, the truck convoy reached Ottawa. All weekend long they peacefully protested. They held up posters and honked their horns. While some of the vehicles left on Monday, there is still a lot of semi-trucks and cars on Parliament Hill. On the 31st of January, speakers were at the rally; the Parliament aslo resumed after a six-week break. [3]
D.C. Is Next
Brian Von D, the administrator at “Convoy to DC 2022,” said,
it will start in California and it will end in DC and we’re gonna stay there, just like Canada is doing.
Brian Von D also added that they were done with the mandates.
We’re done with the mandates, were done with the government telling us what to do, we will continue and we will follow just like the rest of the world on these trucker protests, and they will be 100 percent legal, they will abide by the law. [4]
$9 Million Raised
The truck convoy has a GoFundMe page where if you want to donate money you can. So far, $9,889,110 has been donated to cover the cost of fuel for the truckers. [5] The page says about the convoy,
We are a peaceful country that has helped protect nations across the globe from tyrannical governments who oppressed their people, and now it seems it is happening here. We are taking our fight to the doorsteps of our Federal Government and demanding that they cease all mandates against its people. Small businesses are being destroyed, homes are being destroyed, and people are being mistreated and denied fundamental necessities to survive. It’s our duty as Canadians to put an end to these mandates. [6]
