Could Missouri Work Without Personal Property Taxes?

What could Missourians do with extra money, especially at the end of the year? Missouri Senator Bill Eigel has submitted a bill to abolish all personal property taxes on vehicles and other items.

What He Submitted

In St. Charles County, Missouri Missouri Sen. Bill Eigel (Republican from Weldon Spring) is  planning on renewing his efforts to abolish personal property taxes on vehicles and other items. Earlier this year, Senator Eigel had sponsored a bill to phase out all personal property taxes for the entire state by 2026.

Who Opposed?

However, Sen. Doug Beck (Democrat from south St. Louis County) amended the bill so the phaseout would only apply to St. Charles County. The amendment did advance in the Senate, but its fate is yet unknown.

Now The Debate

Meanwhile, Senator Eigel does plan to reintroduce his measure to include all of Missouri. Senator Eigel said he hopes other senators will join him in expanding it beyond just St. Charles County. The aim of this measure is to bring Missouri in line with 29 other states that do not have personal property taxes.

Nonetheless, St. Peters Mayor Leonardo Pagano called the move a bad idea. He said that it will deprive local governments of funds needed to pay for what he considers vital public services.

“When it was first brought to the whole state, the majority of the state said no,” said Senator Pagano. He went on to say,

Why is St. Charles County going to be the guinea pig? I have a problem with that [1].

While Senator Eigel is hopeful for the bill’s passage, he does admit there is a good chance he might only be able to pass a measure that would impact his home turf of St. Charles County.
