Republican Senator Josh Hawley has vowed to make a Supreme Court’s nominee position on Roe v. Wade the litmus test for confirmation to the highest court. This was the case that legalized killing a baby in the mother’s womb. He made this statement on July 31, 2020 in Washington, D.C.
Specifics
Hawley said that he’d vote only for those who have explicitly acknowledged that this case was wrongly decided. The nominee’s stance on the issue must already be on the record.
Hawley clarified that statement by saying,
I do not want private assurances…I do not want forecasts about future votes or future behavior…I don’t want promises of any sort.
What Does This Senator Want?
Instead, he wants:
evidence that Supreme Court nominees will obey the Constitution and the law. I want to see in the record clear acknowledgment that a nominee understands Roe v. Wade to be a travesty. If that record is not there, then I will not support the nomination. I don’t care who does the nominating.
Hawley explained that the recent Supreme Court decisions should be a wake-up call staring us in the face. For religious conservatives, these decisions ought to be a call to action.
Current Situation?
However, conservatives and Republicans as a whole, do not want to talk about this particular case. Hawley called out his own Republican party as voted in office to fix the killing of unborn babies issue. However, years later, ” The nation is …no closer to the day when the Supreme Court will renounce this outrage…and allow the good and decent people of this nation to debate and decide the matter for ourselves.” [1]
Hawley asks,
How long must this go on?
Future
It is quite likely the next president- whether it be President Trump or Joe Biden- will elect the next Supreme Court justice. This is due to Ruth Ginsburg’s health causing her to be hospitalized several times already this year. And considering that two previous nominees, Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, evaded killing unborn babies questions during their confirmation hearings, this is one position that needs to be brought out to the open before a nominee is confirmed.
Senator Hawley’s speeches regarding a nominee and views on in the womb baby killing can be found here. Senator Hawley served as attorney general for Missouri until 2019.
