On Thursday, November 30, 2023, Senator Schmitt filed the End Covid Tyranny Act. This bill aims to protect Americans from further COVID tyranny and overreach from the executive branch of the federal government. This bill would give Congress greater oversight of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Schmitt’s Thoughts
Senator Schmitt was concerned about the precedent set by the overreaching powers during the COVID pandemic. In an effort to protect Missourians, he wants to decrease federal power. He said,
Mandates, vaccine passports, forced lockdowns, and further overreach imposed by Joe Biden and his army of federal bureaucrats during the COVID pandemic set an extremely dangerous precedent that still persists to this day [1].
Furthermore, he wants to
protect Missourians from further rule-by-decree from unelected bureaucrats [2].
This act limits public health powers by requiring congressional approval for emergencies lasting more than ninety days, among other things. Additionally, it will reform the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and the NIH (National Institute of Health). For starters, it requires term limits. This allows those in authority to live under the rules they make.
Importance
Schmitt went on to explain his exasperation,
Missourians do not need faceless officials buried in a cubicle in Washington telling them how to live their lives [3].
