On March 1, 2025, President Donald Trump made English the official United States language. [1]

Reasoning

In his press release, President Trump said that the United States citizens have used English since its founding. Important documents, including the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, are written in English.

Creates Unity

One official language will create unity for all U.S. citizens. The press release said that one official language will make the United States “strengthened by a citizenry that can freely exchange ideas in one shared language.” Further highlights of one official language are that it will “cultivate a shared American culture for all citizens, ensure consistency in government operations, and create a pathway to civic engagement”

Immigrants

In the press release, it made mention to legal immigrants coming to the U.S. and learning the English, and passing on the language to their children. The press release states that “in welcoming new Americans, a policy of encouraging the learning and adoption of our national language will make the United States a shared home and empower new citizens to achieve the American dream.”
