Fox News host Tucker Carlson has been given access to all US Capitol security footage from January 6, multiple sources have confirmed. Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the House, declared in January that the American people had a right to see all the footage from January 6, 2021, so he handed the tapes over to Tucker Carlson.
January Promise
As part of his bid for the speakership, McCarthy promised to hold hearings on the security failures that led to the Capitol’s overrun. Select committee members were instructed to preserve all records to be reviewed by the newly empowered GOP majority in the future. McCarthy said,
I think the public should see what happened on that day [1].
Why Carlson?
Tucker Carlson from Fox News is regarded as one of the most prominent proponents of what detractors say are January 6 “conspiracy theories” [2]. The most notable claim he has made is that liberal “deep state” partisans within the FBI orchestrated the insurrection to undermine former President Donald Trump. In some of the rioter interviews he conducted, he was sympathetic to their plight, and some were subsequently arrested by the Justice Department and charged with crimes. In regards to these tapes, Carlson said,
there was never any legitimate reason for this footage to remain secret [3].
Speaker McCarthy went on to say,
I watched what Nancy Pelosi did, where she politicized it — where, for the first time in the history as a speaker, not allowing the minority to appoint to a committee, to pick and choose [4].
McCarthy’s Republican allies had hoped to review the material themselves, possibly looking for evidence supporting their claims about the January 6 insurrection, including charges that the FBI used confidential human sources to funnel people into the Capitol [5].
McCarthy seems to be following the “Twitter Files” strategy [6] by releasing information to major influencers, and Carlson will have his chance to see if what the January 6th Select Committee was alleging were true or false. Nonetheless, McCarthy’s decision will ensure that the happenings of January 6 are no longer a secret.Â
