Attorneys who represent Republicans in election cases are being harassed by the Democrats to the point that the next candidate will not be able to find a lawyer to fight on their behalf.
Despite a little-noticed perfunctory order published in late January, a Texas judge refused to halt the Texas Bar’s smear campaign against Attorney General Ken Paxton. What has this got to do with Missouri? A lot!
Unconstitutional
The Texas Bar’s disciplinary complaint against the attorney general is outrageous and unconstitutional. Still, the backstory of the case is almost as troubling — both the machinations underlying the charge against Paxton as well as the barrage of politically charged bar complaints launched after the general election in November 2020 against Republican attorneys who were providing legal advice or litigating a variety of matters.
The 65 Project launched a well-coordinated and well-financed effort in March of 2022 against ten lawyers who were involved in election lawsuits following the 2020 presidential election. As reported by Influence Watch, the 65 Project was “conceived” by former Clinton administration official Melissa Moss and is managed by lawyer Michael Teter, an associate at Perkins Coie, which is connected to the DNC. In addition to David Brock of Media Matters fame, the group’s advisory board comprises former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D.
Both Sidesd Charged?
There is no Democratic-aligned attorney who has challenged election laws or results in the past being targeted by the 65 Project, which seeks to disbar 111 lawyers from 26 states in total. As a result, the project focuses solely on Republican lawyers, including Eastman, by calling for her disbarment from the Supreme Court Bar.
The Democrat project targets more than just private attorneys. A complaint filed by the 65 Project against 15 state attorneys general in September, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia, advocated that the bars in those states take disciplinary action against the attorneys general for conduct related to the 2020 presidential election.
However, Texas AG Paxton wasn’t included because local Democrats had already stepped forward. In addition, the backstory reveals that state bars have been politicized largely outside of Democratic-connected groups such as 65 Project or leftist locales like Washington, D.C., and California.
