Alton, Mo. – Palm Sunday is April 5, 2020. There is a lot of history behind Palm Sunday which is the Sunday before Easter.

The feast celebrates Jesus’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. This feast is mentioned in each of the four Gospels which are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Palm Sunday is named for when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, and the people threw palm tree leaves onto the ground as he passed by. Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem took place about a week before his resurrection. (John 12: 1)

Before Jesus Christ entered the city, he was at the Mount of Olives. He sent two of his disciples into the village nearby and to get a certain colt. The colt is understood to be a donkey. The disciples did what Jesus told them to do and brought back the colt. (Luke 19:29-31)

People laid down their coats and palm tree leaves on the path Jesus was riding on. The people cried out “Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel  that cometh in the name of the Lord” (John 12:13) When some of the Pharisees said to Jesus to quiet the people, he said, “I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.” (Luke 19:40)
