Washington, D.C., faces a record-high level of gun violence. It is the second year in a row that our nation’s capital has seen over 200 homicides. How to slow down the violence is the question.
There is a new campaign of violence prevention being promoted by activists with Anacostia Coordinating Council. Contrary to popular opinion, it is not all about gun control. In place of that, the group plans to post posters throughout the city with the Bible’s Sixth Commandment – “You shall not kill.”
Several lessons have been learned from the past, according to Philip Pannell, the group’s executive director. He clarified by saying,
Around 30 years ago, at the height of the crack epidemic, when we were also experiencing violence and homicides, then at-large Council member William Lightfoot printed-up some ‘Thou shalt not kill’ posters and put them throughout the city [1].
Even now, D.C.’s Democrat mayor Muriel Bowser is providing 1,000 posters.
Genesis 9:6 says, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in His own image [2].”
Time will tell if the Bible will have an effect on our nation’s capitol.
