Alton, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday, August 20, 2020, that they have adopted several new measures/policies while going forward. Some of those measures/policies are fans are not allowed to wear headdresses, Indian-themed paint, among other things.
In 2014, the Chiefs began a dialogue with local leaders from different American Indian backgrounds and experiences. Kansas City’s goal was to better understand the issues in the American Indians communities. These meaningful conversations with the American Indian Community Working Group helped us educate ourselves and our fans, and our partnership with these leaders has helped guide our American Indian Heritage Month Games, as well as the ceremonial Blessing of the Drum and the Four Directions of Arrowhead Stadium. Adopted Measures/Policies
The adopted measures/policies for going to the games are as follows:
- Effective immediately, fans will not be allowed to wear headdresses in the stadium.
- Fans that wear Indian-themed paint will be asked to remove it when going through security screening.
- The Chiefs are in a review process of the Arrowhead Chop and plan to have additional discussions in the future.
- The Chiefs are also looking at all options for modifying the Drum Deck that still unifies fans and players but “better represents the spiritual significance of the drum in American Indian cultures.”
